al volver: a postcard from portland oregon

Hello,
I am back in Portland after a very quick month away. While I was gone, I decided that I ought to start writing one of these things as a companion piece to my etsy store (www.bittersugar.etsy.com).

It's hard to get started.

I may as well tell you that I just spent the last of my Powell's bookstore credit buying an old weathered illustrated Spanish Dictionary (rances diccionario illustrado de la lengua espaƱola) and a slutty sale cookbook about Mexican Cantina Cooking. The dictionary has nearly crumbling cheap brown pages and excellent line drawings.  The cookbook is sleazy. I say this because of the big shiny saturated food pictures and awkward writing in the beginning about the Mexicans and how they eat.  I was flipping through it just now and, maybe I am tired, but it reads a little like kitchy 1960's touristy books about exotic far-away places. The recipes however, are gorgeous. If I actually continue to write on this thing, I may even post one if it is well received.

I hope you are well. That's all for today.
