Dear Reader,
Another colorless drippy day. Most the things I wanted to get done can't be done today because it is Monday. On Mondays all sorts of Portland businesses are closed.
I was going to make a cassoulet, which is basically a French hearty stew with beans and meat. Mark Bittman has a very simple sounding recipe on his website. If I were more professional, I would put a link here but I trust you to google his name and find his website. It has lots of easy, everyday recipes. (P.S. I tested out and can highly recommend the fennel and celery salad).
But before making the cassoulet, I first I wanted to visit Gartner's Country Meat Market, which allegedly has the largest meat counter in the continental U.S. I have been meaning to visit this place for quite some time and now that I live fairly close, I am dying to see it. I bought everything else for the recipe at New Seasons - and could have bought the meat too; except a day like today, with a low muddy sky and very little going for it, needed the excitement of a field trip. I drove all the way to 75th and Colombia, only to find that Gartner's is closed on Monday. Mission thwarted, looks like the recipe will have to wait for better weather, a bike ride and another day.
I did manage to visit the awesome Vietnamese sandwich shop hidden away on northeast 68th and Broadway. It's a little tiny shop and I wanted to post a picture of it here, only it's not working. The sandwiches are $2.50 and amazing and the iced coffee lifted my spirits considerably. Which makes me think- why don't I ever think to buy condensed milk for at home? It is the greatest with strong coffee, it would make my little bialetti so happy.
